How Pioneers Lived?! Talk about FREE!

My two oldest girls are at their "G" Pa's this weekend doing what he called "A Pioneer's Life". He said he was going to teach them what life was back in the day of the Pioneers. Now I didn't know what to expect when I dropped them off but it actually looked fun...and pretty much FREE lol. Here are some of the things he set up in his backyard that they will be doing:

1. "Tilling the Fields"..or working in his garden. He plan to teach them how people got food from seeds and hard work lol.

2. Going to the "local swimming hole"..this is actually the neighbors pool...heck you have to be rewarded for all that tilling.

3. There was a "spring" where they would get their water to use in the garden and wash up for dinner...I think this was a hose and a bucket but he made it look like a waterfall.

4. There was an "outhouse" where he dug a hole, made a seat, surrounded it with sheets and stocked it with some newspapers. My 12 year old daughter looked horrified...until he explained they were using the bathroom inside, but he wanted her to see what they HAD to use back then lol.

5. Cooking over an open fire...he set up a fire pit outside so that they could cook hot dogs, beans, roast some marshmallows..you know "Pioneer Food".

6. There was also a "Magic Brown Chicken"..now this may look like an ordinary piece of cardboard shaped like a chicken and nailed to the bottom of a tree..but in the morning there will be eggs in its nest so they can make breakfast!

There were a lot more activities planned. I think they will have fun "roughing it" for the next couple days and I can't wait to hear on Sunday how they made out. Anyone else have a "unique" activity they do with their kids?
